Observation Narrative
Stand of mixed oaks with interrupted understory of ericads and Ilex opaca. It was difficult to place the plot such to minimize compositional heterogeneity and inclusion of gaps and to capture representative portion of stand. One old gap, which was created by at least one treefall event, is present in module 7. The highest density of coarse woody debris and ericaceous shrubs exists beneath this gap, although the canopy has largely been filled in by expansion of adjacent crowns and release of subcanopy individuals of Quercus rubra.
Stake A stands near edge of ridge SE of small draw and ca. 20 m from trail. GPS positions recorded in 2D mode.
